Gdyż w odległych czasach rozkładano stół po to, żeby w ogóle do niego do usiąść.

A żeby taki stół słusznych rozmiarów o innych porach dnia i nocy nie zagracał całego pomieszczenia, rozkładano go tylko w porze posiłków.

Stąd mamy wyrażenie: mettre la table.

Ale żeby usiąść do stołu, najpierw układno stół – tzn deskę na kawałkach drewna, które służyły za nogi. A dopiero potem siadano do stołu: se mettre à table.

Ale wyrażenie: se mettre à table ma jeszcze inne, zupełnie niepowiązane znaczenie i oznacza – wyznać wszystko, wyśpiewać prawdę, włącznie z wydaniem współwinnych…
